strategies & tips of the trade for a successful equipment purchase

Buying used equipment with eyes wide open

[40 Years of knowing what works & what doesn’t]

Why you should purchase directly from the owner of the equipment?

  1. When looking for a used piece of printing equipment it is important to understand when a good deal is a good deal. There are numerous important steps to follow to make your purchase go smoothly. It is imperative that you know what you are buying and who you are buying it from. Know the issues to avoid expensive surprises. Have an all-inclusive cost breakdown sitting on your floor, up and running. Negotiate the best purchase price, including moving and start up. In your budget to purchase it is important to include a set amount of money for issues during commissioning the machine on your floor. I refer to it as a warranty reserve. The amount can vary depending on many factors such as type of machine (folder or press), age, etc.
  2. It is important to have a qualified technician inspect the machine and get an expert technical inspection report. This should include mechanical, electrical, and printing/operational condition.
  3. The foundation is often an issue and should be carefully considered.
  4. If the machine is sold by a 3rd or 4th party (don’t laugh it happens), work out a fair commission before buying. Going into your purchase, know how much commission you are paying and to who? For insurance and liability purposes, I strongly recommend paying the owner of the equipment directly. The broker can also be paid directly.
  5. During this worldwide pandemic it is more important than ever to have the equipment purchase certified (not by the seller) and know what you are buying and how much you are paying for what.
  6. Insurance and who is liable. How much insurance does your machine have? Who is the beneficiary?

Don’t learn the hard way!

I have 2 decades of $10m in sales; grew and maintained a parts & services department of $28m annually; and even built my own business to $17m in annual sales. Trust me, I can help.

Keys to Success:

  • Buy the equipment from the owner of the equipment… PAY THE OWNER DIRECTLY!
  • Have the machine inspected by an independent 3rd party.
  • Have the same techs reinstall the machine that removed it.
  • Make sure any and all liens are cleared.
  • Insurance is key. This has huge consequences… if not handled properly.
